EU Referendum Campaign - The People's Pledge

DM supports new campaign for an EU referendum

The People's Pledge is a new, all-party campaign to secure an
'in-out' referendum on Britain's membership of the EU.

The Democracy Movement is enthusiastically backing this exciting new initiative to finally force the political class to give the British people a say on whether we wish to be ruled by those we elect to Westminster - or by the unaccountable institutions of the European Union.

Much more than merely a petition, the campaign's unique strategy sets it apart from all other referendum campaigns and gives it the greatest chance of success.

The People's Pledge aims to focus pressure on MPs in their own constituencies, by signing up as many people as possible who pledge to "use my vote to help secure a majority of MPs in Parliament who support an EU referendum".

The number of people signing in each constituency will be displayed on the campaign's website, and this unique feature will pile the pressure on MPs by enabling them to see exactly the strength of local feeling for the right to have a say on the EU.

Nearer the time of the next election, the views of rival candidates will also be added. All of those standing for election will see how many votes they stand to gain, or lose, as a result of their stance on an 'in-out' EU referendum.

Ultimately, the aim is to demonstrate to anti-referendum MPs, particularly those in the most marginal seats, that their jobs are on the line if they don't decide to support an in-out EU vote and to generate competition between candidates for the pro-referendum 'block vote'.

The campaign has already assembled an impressive spectrum of
EU referendum supporters include John Cryer MP (Labour), Zac Goldsmith MP (Conservative), Jenny Jones AM (London Assembly Member, Green party), Marta Andreasen MEP (UKIP & former EU chief accountant), among many others. It
has the support not only of those who are opposed to, or sceptical about, the EU, but also those who are committed to Britain's continued EU membership but who nevertheless acknowledge that the people should decide ...

DM campaign demands cuts to spending on the EU

Every day Britain pays £20.8 million more to the EU than we receive back in grants and subsidies.

That's £7.6 billion (net) being given to the EU this year alone, at a time when public services are being cut and taxes increased in order to pay off Britain's debts.

In a recent speech, our new Prime Minister, David Cameron, described the task of cutting Britain's "massive deficit and our growing debt" as "the most urgent issue facing Britain today".

As a result, the coalition government's first Budget announced that VAT will rise to 20% from January 2011 and that almost all government departments face spending cuts of up to 40%.

Given the drastic nature of these plans, it is completely untenable that there was no mention of any cuts whatsoever to the £7.6 billion ear-marked for the EU.

Worse, the EU will continue to enjoy spending huge sums of public money from Britain despite auditors repeatedly questioning the "legality and regularity" of large areas of the EU's accounts and regular reports of waste and fraud.

That's why the DM and the TaxPayers' Alliance have teamed up to launch a new campaign. If public services face severe cuts, it is only fair that the billions we hand over to the EU should also be cut ...

The Democracy Movement is a non-party pressure group to defend liberal democracy in Britain and across Europe. We believe that this is being fundamentally undermined by the single currency, the EU Constitution / Lisbon Treaty, and the drive to create a Brussels-based system of government in which all major decisions are taken at the EU centre by undemocratic institutions.

  • We are pro-European: because of our committment to diversity, democracy and decentralisation in our continent, we consider ourselves to be the real pro-Europeans in this debate;

  • We are internationalist: because we emphatically reject not only the 'little Englander' but also the 'little European' mindset that currently predominates in Brussels;

  • Our long-term objective: is of a Europe of Democracies that trade together, enjoy cultural exchange with each other, and co-operate voluntarily where it makes sense to do so. These are very different aims to the out-dated centralism and state-building ambitions driving today's EU.

  • What we do: as a non-party group we bring together people in all parties and none who share our beliefs into a large network of supporters and volunteer-run branches. Our main activities are at the grass-roots, working to spread our ideas and direct pressure for change on political decision-makers.
